Drama Therapy This is funded by Lloyds TSB Foundation, The BIG Lottery Fund, The Cattanach Trust. What Is Drama Therapy? Drama therapy supports and gives young people the opportunity to express any thoughts and feelings, to look at their relationships, and to help make sense of their world . A drama therapist offers, just as a counsellor would , a therapeutic relationship based on a non-judgemental, empathic and genuine way of being and being listened to. In a session you might work verbally in discussion and non-verbally through creative mediums such as story, character, metaphor, role play, movement, music or art. The creative medium offers a non-confrontational way of exploring, whilst containing powerful and difficult emotions.
What do I do in drama therapy? You are given the opportunity to express any difficult thoughts and feelings you may have You will be supported by the therapist to help make sense of what is going on in your life and how to move forward in a positive way.
Do I have to be good at drama? No. It is not about being a good actor or being creative. Its about making a choice of how to express your internal world which may be in a verbal or non-verbal way. There is no right or wrong. You may decide to just talk in your sessions without using a creative medium. When and where will I see the drama therapist? You will see the young persons therapist once a week for an hour in a quiet room within the centre.
Who will know that I am doing drama therapy? The content of your sessions will always remain strictly confidential unless there are concerns for your safety or that you are in danger of being harmed or are a harm to someone else. The person that referred you will know that you are coming for therapy. If other professionals are involved in your care, we may all meet to make sure we are all working together to help you.
What do I tell my friends? You can tell people that you are coming to drama therapy if you wish. Drama therapy is private unless you or someone you know is unsafe or at risk of being hurt. We will talk to you about this when we meet.
