We cannot chose who our parents are Children's Therapy Service Funded by BBC Children in Need, Lloyds TSB, the Big Lottery and the Cattanach Trust
We provide assessment and ongoing therapy to children/young people who have lived with a parent/carer or sibling with an addiction. The project aims to strengthen family relationships and support children affected by parental substance misuse by allowing children the opportunity to express themselves fully and at their own pace with the assurance that they will be understood and accepted.
We have two Therapists. One Therapist works with children aged 3-11 years and one Therapist works with young people aged 12 – 18 years.
Children's Play Therapy (3 to 11 years)
Children can have difficulty saying in words what they feel or how experiences have affected them. Play Therapy enables children to express their feelings, explore relationships, tell about experiences and wishes. Play is the natural way that children understand their world, express thoughts, feelings, and develop social skills.
Through toys and art materials, children can show their inner world through what they choose and how they play. Role play allows children to re-enact significant and at times traumatic events which have happened during their lives. The therapist helps the child to make sense of what has happened so that they can develop an emotional language and express themselves more easily.
Young People's Therapy (12 to 18 years) Young People's Therapy can be delivered in different forms these include counselling, discussion other verbal communication or non-verbal creative forms. The therapy sessions can be tailored to suit the individual needs of the client.
To refer a child/young person for assessment please call 01563 521343
Family members or professionals can make a referral to the service. We will be happy to explore the appropriateness of potential referrals either in person or on the telephone.
We require as much information regarding the child and their presenting issues as possible. The therapist may contact you if further information is required. On occasion, the referrer is invited into our premises to discuss the nature of the child’s issues. The child/young person’s consent must be sought before an appointment will be given. A child should never be worked with in isolation therefore parents, carers (foster carers) will also be expected to engage in the therapeutic process.
We believe the emotional, physical and psychological well being of the child is paramount. Children should be afforded the same level of respect and autonomy as the adults who care for them. To ensure a safe, therapeutic space is created; all therapy sessions will remain confidential unless there are concerns for the safety or well being of the child or other children. Concerns surrounding child welfare, significant harm or child protection will be shared with the appropriate authorities.
