How it's used

Heroin is a brownish coloured powder but can be white prior to being mixed.  Heroin can be smoked (chasing the dragon) or injected.  Heroin is not swallowed because when it mixes with stomach acids it reverts back to diamorphine, therefore ingestion can be fatal.  Injection produces more intense effects.

 

Possible Symptoms

Heroin is a powerful depressant drug and acts like a strong sedative.  It produces feelings of deep relaxation, euphoria.  Users feel warm, drowsy, relaxed, detached and free from all worries and fears.

 

Some things to look for

Paper/tinfoil wraps, burned teaspoons, numerous lighters, lots of tinfoil (burned), syringes, tourniquets (laces, ties, belts, charity bands), Jif lemon juice, distinctive smell (chemical, sickly, sweet, musty).  Pinpointed pupils, very drowsy, disoriented and uncoordinated, slurred speech, drastic weight loss, waxy poor colouring, goose bumps.

Withdrawal symptoms (if the drug is stopped) include; runny nose, sweats, chills, cramps (flu like symptoms).

 

Dangers

Physical dependency.  Accidental overdose can cause coma, damage to blood vessels from injecting (infection).  Sharing equipment puts users at risk of Hepatitis or HIV/Aids.

 

Legislation

Heroin is a Class A drug

Possession carries the penalty of up to 7 years in prison and/or an unlimited fine

Supply carries a penalty of up to life in prison and/or an unlimited fine
